Welcome to my Blog

A warm welcome to my Blog

I shall post some news of interest to Sri lankans about life in Sri Lanka in the period 1950-1960 mainly. This will feature articles on music, general history and medicine. I am dedicated to humanism and refuse to judge people according to labels they are born with. Their actions and behaviour shall be my yardsticks, always cognizant of the challenges they faced in life.

Another song on Youtube

Hithin Ma Nosale is a beautful song and this is my attempt to play on my Tyros 4 and sing along.

Sithin Ma Nosalee

On my Birthday in May 2014

This day I reach three scores and ten
A time for reflection
A time to be grateful
A time to be thankful
My parents first and foremost
Because of their unstinted love and direction, I am what I am today
My family, immediate and distant, my relatives from all sides
My friends, young and old, near and far, without barriers

To Lord Buddha who made sense of this World to me
and taught me not to be avaricious, rein in desires,
and to try and foster Universal loving kindness to all beings,
and to be aware of impermanence and change.

My Teachers who shaped my enquiring mind,
and helped me to become a good citizen ( I hope)
My colleagues for their understanding, friendship and tolerance
My patients for trusting me and giving me a sense of purpose in life
To my students who taught me so much

To the woman I loved and married
for happy memories and two wonderful sons

To those who may not have liked me
For teaching me how to practise true love
for loving your friends is easy,
but loving your “enemy” is harder
For all this I am truly grateful

And thank you so much
To all those who sent me good wishes today

And to all those who didn’t but felt so in their hearts.

Evidence based thinking and other thoughts

"I had been always been scrupulously careful to avoid the smallest suggestion of infant indoctrination, which I think is ultimately responsible for much of the evil in the world. -- I very much wanted her (his daughter), as I want all children, to make up her own mind freely when she became old enough to do so. I would encourage her to think without telling her what to think" - Sentiments expressed by Richard Dawkins which I fully agree with, distancing myself from accepting "truths" based on Tradition, Authority or Revelation but on verifiable evidence

"In your quest to find solutions, do not create problems where there are none" - MG

"People are too quick to criticise and too slow to praise" - MG

Gaza atrocities - how is this possible in the name of Religion?

To me what is happening in Gaza strengthens my belief that implementing what is written in Ancient Religious texts (outmoded in my view) is dangerous and harmful. Political dogma can also be harmful but it is not underwritten by a guarantee of Eternal security through unknown and feared Powers, and is therefore less powerful. Political dogma claims to be a way forward for Society but not as an Absolute Truth (which Religion does).

Will a time come when respected Religious Leaders would have the gall and strength of character to say to their followers that the dangerous, inflammatory and inhuman statements attributed to Religious texts are palpably wrong and are contradictory to the basic message of the Teacher who espoused love, forgiveness and abhorred violence? Till they do, mindless followers will continue to quote parts of these texts to justify their unholy acts against Humanity

My composition played on Yamaha Tyros 4

This is played on my Tyros 4. It is called "Forever" and has a Bossa Nova beat and features mainly the saxophone,
