Welcome to my Blog

A warm welcome to my Blog

I shall post some news of interest to Sri lankans about life in Sri Lanka in the period 1950-1960 mainly. This will feature articles on music, general history and medicine. I am dedicated to humanism and refuse to judge people according to labels they are born with. Their actions and behaviour shall be my yardsticks, always cognizant of the challenges they faced in life.

My own Facebook favourite posts (by me in reverse order)

Spare a thought for one of the greatest human beings who ever lived, Mahatma Gandhi of India, who was assassinated on the 30th of January 1948. He did not project the sort of image admired, adored and adulated by current generations. He did not sport a trendy hairdo, wear designer clothes, live in opulent mansions or travel in fast cars. In fact he wore only a simple dhoti but what he lacked in style, he made up with oodles of pure humanity, tolerance and love. These are just three of his many wise quotes. which are very relevant in the material world of today -

"The world has enough for everyone's need, but not enough for everyone's greed".

"The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others"

" An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind"

Gem from cricket commentator Sri Lanka V Bangladesh ---

"It's just a matter of time how long Sri lanka decides to bat"
(referring to when a declaration is expected)

A man’s ethical behavior should be based effectually on sympathy, education, and social ties and needs; no religious basis is necessary. Man would indeed be in a poor way if he had to be restrained by fear of punishment and hope of reward after death. If people are good only because they fear punishment, and hope for reward, then we are a sorry lot indeed- (Albert Einstein, “Religion and Science”, New York Times Magazine, 9 November 1930

Nelson Mandela has passed away and we have just lost one of the greatest men of our era.He made the future better because he was aware of the past, able to learn from it but willing to forgive and move on by making best use of the present moment, the only moment we all got for certain. He believed in the innate goodness of Man and showed that differences are inevitable but should be understood and respected rather than chase the false ideal of complete equality which will remain a pipe dream. The best way to honour him is to try and emulate him, even in the tiniest way.

What a World we live in- Harris English is American (Golfer), Carl White is Black and Roger Black is White, not to mention that the May Ball is held in June and that Yorkshire Pudding is not a pudding!

Two aerials meet and fall in love and get married. The wedding was terrible but the reception was brilliant!

This clearly shows why a round wheel is so inefficient in terms of braking whereas the square wheel sits mightily on the slope without a hint of movement (excluding the presence of gale force winds)

Just been to End of World concert. Fabulous ! Elvis, Beatles (except Paul), Bethoven, Mozart, Ravi Shankar,Doris Day were some of the artistes. Princess Diana was chief Guest and she came with Gandhi and Martin Luther King. Nelson Mandela was expected but he was getting a bit late. Amazing spectacle!

A Christmas thoughts for all my frieds and family.
" A life of poverty founded on morality, is better than a life of affluence acquired through corrupt practices and illegal means" -- Jesus Christ

"Christmas becomes beautiful not merely because of the attractive items such as clothes that fill the shops; not because the roads are adorned with colourful electric bulbs that are lit along them. The churches do not become attractive on Christmas Day merely because of the Psalms sung in them. Homes do not become pleasant merely because of the delicious food items prepared in them to celebrate Christmas. Christmas Day becomes beautiful when the mind is freed from anger and revengeful feelings; when people are able to go beyond petty divisions of caste, creed and race; when corruption and injustice are shattered and when morals, justice and equality reign. The message of Christmas is Peace, but it should go deeper than mere superficial peace. Christmas Day will be more meaningful if we emphasize the importance of transgressing petty differences and co-existing peacefully. The most sublime and noble manner in which we could honour the great being born on this day is by turning ourselves into good human beings" -- Ven. Prof. Bellanwila Wimalaratana Thera (A Buddhist priest in Sri lanka.

There is a cemetery in Leeds which is so popular that people are dying to get in there.

Life must go on whether you like it or not, so might as well like it!

Guard well within yourself that treasure, kindness. Know how to give without hesitation, how to lose without regret, how to acquire without meanness. -George Sand , novelist (1804-1876)

My grandpa started walking
five miles a day when he was 60.
Now he's 97 years old
and we have no idea where the hell he is.

My poem titled "The joy of being loved"

"Your image is etched in my heart
as the morning dew sparkles in the sun
Your smile lights up my soul
as the winds disperse the clouds
Your touch sets my body tingling
as the chirping of birds fills the air
Your embrace cocoons me with love
as the warm sunshine casts a spell of joy"

Broken heart - poem by MG

His harsh words cut through her like a knife on butter,
words which caused much hurt and no man should utter.
Anguish spreads on her face like a dark shadow upon a meadow.
His mistaken love exposed like a rotten tree that has lost its leaves.
Like a flower shorn of its petals, with a broken heart she grieves.

"Politicians and Nappies should be changed often....... and for the same reason.
Not sure of the author of this but I thought it was pretty good!

I thought this was really funny - "You do not need a parachute to skydive. ...........You only need a parachute to skydive twice"

A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty-

Sir Winston Churchill

"Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we are here we might as well dance" Author unknown.

PG Wodehouse quoted in an article in the TLS 29th dev 11- “I heard yesterday that Shakespeare was not alive. It steeped me in profound gloom. But I thought eftsoons that I was alive so it was all right for the Literature of the World”.

I came across this word reading Prof Ray Tallis's book "Aping Mankind"- in which he said the aim of a book he wrote was to "expose the systemic confusion and terminological legerdemain in evolutionary -based cognitive psychology by examining the language in which it is expressed:.

He who has a why can endure any how. -Friedrich Nietzsche, philosopher (1844-1900)

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:
Before we set our hearts too much on anything, let us examine how happy are those who already possess it. -Francois, duc de La Rochefoucauld, moralist (1613-1680)

The protocol driven, target driven, "numbers matter more than service quality" driven, "balance the bookd somehow driven" NHS is at further risk of being damaged irreparably. SAVE it from further harm. Health is NOT a business for people to make money.

What's on my mind? Nothing, absolutely nothing, zilch, nicht, nada, definitely nothing, yep, nowt.........

Thoughts for today
1. Decided not to go to Tipperary - it's a long long way to go and I am tired
2. I was a teetotaler till I met my Boozy friend N... and now I don't drink tea at all!

Good to know that good people like me saying that it is good to be good!

Golf is good for anybody. Exercise, lovely scenery, challenge, good friends, what more do you want! "Go on, have a laugh, Take up Golf, Exercise and fun, Out there in the Sun"

Grin and Tonic.
Cheering up we all do need
Wouldn't it be nice if we succeed
Specially when grumpy and malign
Though may be not for all the time

Many a way of doing this sure
No need for Spirits, that I assure
A joke never fails to lift ones' spirits
That smile is back, it knows no limits

Booze can help they sometimes say
Why not do both, they ask if you may
What now I say is not a gimmick

Just go and try a Grin and Tonic

LEARN FROM THE PAST BUT DON'T LIVE IN IT

Those who don't play Golf don't know what they are missing!
